The revival of the loom art of Pappados in Gera Lesvos

With the aim of reviving the traditional art of weaving, the executives of the Folklore Cultural Association are working in Pappados, Geras Lesvos. “A forgotten art, known only to some old residents of the island and that in the coming years, will disappear forever if we do not act now,” said the president of the Association Giorgos Vounatsos, speaking of APE-MPE.

Already, the residents of the Pappados area, but also from all over Gera, are trained to revive the traditional loom. They even used an 1830 loom or bed as the loom is called in the local idiom.

Already, “strings are dragged to the wall”, the so-called “famous” is made, and then the “loading” of the “instead of wooden brake” is followed by “mitaria”, “scallops” and finally, the last weaving.

The art of weaving, said Mr. Vounatsos, is an ancient art that until a few years ago was a point of reference in every household. Meanwhile, some local communities literally live off the weaving products. “After the olive harvest around March, the weaving season begins which continues until autumn. With the products are true works of art. Today, she continues, very few women know how to weave “Our Association is trying to save and revive art for the benefit of the local population and the local economy,” concluded Mr. Vounatsos.
