The historical archival material and the contemporary audio-visual evidence are the result of the field research carried out during the period 2023-24 in Archipelagos Network in the context of the Cycladic Maritime Arts project, which was first presented on the organization’s online platform as an interactive digital map.

The Amorgos exhibition invites residents and visitors to the island to explore the fishing heritage through photographic archival installations by Jacob Moe and photo-documents by Maurizio Borriello, redefining the marine environment of the Cyclades as a palimpsest of knowledge and culture.

For the first time in Athens, the Archipelago Network presents the rich and multidimensional maritime traditions of the Cyclades through the multi-media exhibition Art of the Sea, which will be held from July 4 to September 21 at the Goethe-Institut Athens. The exhibition traces the connections between these maritime communities in the past and present, through archival material and contemporary photographic, audio and audiovisual documentation.

Highlighting the value and the uncertainty of woodworking, fishing and navigation in the Cyclades, the exhibition in Athens invites the public to reorient their feelings towards the sea, towards a future that includes it. Visitors to the exhibition will discover a universe of objects, landscapes, boats and images of the historical sites of the islands, like a shipyardTarsanas” in Syros, the bay of Ai-Yiannis in Paros, the carnagio of Armeni, Santorini, and the fishing ports of Amorgos and Koufonisia. The exhibition will also present historical material from the Historical-Folklore Museum of Naoussa (Othona Kapari Collection) in Paros and from various private collections from Syros, Amorgos and Santorini.

As part of the exhibition, it will happen a two-part screening series on July 4 and September 11y, where archival, ethnographic and narrative short films about the maritime community in Greece and beyond will be presented.
