Three steps to preserve the nature and environment of the island

If there’s one island we’ve heard more of in international tributes in this roughly 4-month span of 2024, it’s is Milos. Precisely, it started at the end of 2023 and continues to attract travel bloggers and travel (and not only) publications.

Germans, Australians and many other nationalities, they set their sights on the island of Milos this year to do relatively cheap vacation, without suffering for two hours in the sun until they find a sunbed, an umbrella, a small space to sit on the beaches, as it happens in other islands.

However, since such a promotion, it is logical that it also brings the eyes of investors and moves are made to build hotel units, of the island is in a state of readiness to ensure that its nature, its natural environment, its urban identity, its culture, its essence will not change. We have seen this happen in other islands and with the number of investments made in the country and will be made in the coming years, stability should be at the highest possible level.

Recently, we read the milosvoice.gr in a meeting of the Environmental Committee of Milos, the mayor of the island was ordered to proceed with 3 measures that will lay the foundations for the protection of natural and urban wealth.

  • To ask the Minister of Environment for his immediate approval Open City Spatial and Residential Organization Plan (SHOAP), which he has already submitted.
  • To assign legal and technical consultants to control building permits and to appeal, if necessary, to the Court of Justice with a request for the suspension of work and the suspension of the relevant ministerial decision regarding the construction of large tourist units, which are not in accordance with the size- on or in their location in places of special beauty that, due to a loophole in the law, allows such opportunistic exploitation.
  • To be monitored by internal regulation through the services of the Municipality and the urban planning and environmental regulations and approval of the Commission, as suggested by the engineer Ms. Sofia Vamvouni, to protect the settlements of the island and to prevent the occurrence of arbitrary constructions and frauds of natural relief.

dash from last year’s towel movewhich started in Paros and reached Naxos and other islands, we can see movements, on a small scale at the moment, which show that it is necessary to constantly observe how the investments in the islands develop, if it is in accordance with the nature of each. islandif they respect the natural environment, if they are careful to encourage and promote it. Because it is not enough to just respect it, they must also invest in it.

Milos has enough natural wealth, and shows the way for the struggle to protect. Of course, without the corresponding belief and intention from the local authorities, nothing can be done.
