An ode to women is the exhibition with photographs of the pioneer of the lens, Cindy Sherman

He is no ordinary photographer. His artistic practice operates somewhere between photography and performance – a fact that will establish him as a pioneer of the medium already in the 70s. And, indeed, the big one Cindy Sherman he often works alone in the studio, taking on the role of make-up artist, hairdresser, stylist, director. And the model: he transforms into various fictional characters he captures in his photographs. He is, in a way, the “taking a selfie». That’s what it’s called – and not by chance.

In individual sections, the exhibition with more than 100 works by “Cindy Sherman in Cycladic: First Acts“, which he organized from now until 4/11 Museum of Cycladic Art , a major artistic event. This is the first museum exhibition of photographic works by the famous American artist, featuring landmark works from his first series Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980), as well as his series Rear Screen Projections (1980), Centerfolds (1981) and Color Studies (1982).

The mother – goddess of fertility

The presentation of his works, under the same roof as the famous Cycladic Art Collection of the Museum of Cycladic Art, creates associations with the famous marble female figurines of the 3rd millennium BC. which dominates the Cycladic art and has influenced the work of many artists in the 20th and 21st centuries. According to scholars, these figurines are considered to represent the mother-goddess of fertility and rebirth, the goddess who over the years changes forms, like women, who adopt different and many papers.

The exhibition focuses on women, of identity and its description, exploring, from the characters of the works of the internationally renowned creator, a wide range of female stereotypes and asking questions that always remain relevant. And all this with Sherman himself, as his own “muse”, who changed the various invented characters that he got in different settings.
Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, New York, he made a splash in the late 1970s with his famous series of 70 black and white photographs “Untitled Movie Modes». In this series he embodies many stereotypical female characters inspired by his images Hollywood film noir and B movies.

Using various costumes and props to change his appearance and create photographs similar to the film’s promotional images, he explores the relationship between art and identity in consumer culture – something that worries the his job since.
