Jolie won the award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival

Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, who received accolades for the Netflix biopic “Maria,” will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The award ceremony will take place on February 5, the festival announced.

In her new film, directed by Pablo Larraín, she plays Maria Callas, the greatest diva of the lyrical theater.

It will be released in US theaters on November 27, before streaming on Netflix on December 11.

The award, named after film critic and author Leonard Maltin in 2015, is given to figures in the film industry “who enrich culture with their achievements”. Past recipients of the award include James Cameron, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Christopher Nolan.

“Angelina Jolie chose to make bold choices, both as an actress and as a director,” Maltin said in a statement. “He sets the bar high and always succeeds.”

In addition to his new film “Maria” a few days ago the star was at the Toronto International Film Festival with his fifth directorial venture “Walang Dugo”. It is based on the best-selling novel by Italian author Alessandro Baricco and follows a girl’s journey for revenge, but also inner peace in a time of war. Starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir.

The 40th Santa Barbara Film Festival will take place from February 4 to 15 with the full schedule to be announced in January.
