Naxos-Moutsouna: The results of the Cycladic Islands (ECyNI) survey are presented today

What do we see?

The Cycladic Islands Survey (EKYNI) program is an archaeological survey of the small, uninhabited islands of the Cycladic archipelago in the Aegean. The program is a collaboration between the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, the Norwegian Institute of Athens and Carleton College (USA).

In the years 2019 and 2020, systematic research was carried out on 21 islands in the islands of Paros and Antiparos, where human activity has been documented from the earliest times to the present. In 2021 research is focused on the islands surrounding the western Cyclades (Kythnos, Serifos and Sifnos) and Syros.

In 2022, work moved to the islands of Milos and Kimolos, as well as Polyaigo, the largest uninhabited island in the Aegean. Currently, the EKYNI program is conducting surveys on 45 Cyclades islands.

The multinational group consists of researchers from Greece, Norway, USA, Bulgaria, Germany, Serbia, Turkey and the UK.

The HUNTING program is managed by Dr. Dimitris Athanasoulis (Superintendent of Antiquities of Cyclades) and co-directed by Dr. Alex Knodell (Associate Professor of Classics, Carleton College, USA) and Dr. Zarko Tankosic (Program Director, Center for Early Sapiens Behavior, University of Bergen, Norway). Thanks to the organizations and people who support the program, as well as to the local communities of the islands of Paros, Antiparos, Kythnos, Sifnos, Syros and Kimolos for their warm hospitality.

The program is funded and supported by the US National Science Foundation, Loeb Classical Library Foundation, Archaeological Institute of America and National Endowment for the Humanities (AIA-NEH Grant for Archaeological Research), Carleton College, Afentake Foundation, Institute of Aegean Prehistory (INSTAP) and the Norwegian Institute of Athens.
